I have been wanting to do something different with a TV fireplace. I wanted a fireplace video that wasn't just in the usual format. It had to have a funky and artistic feel to it and I knew just the place. There was a bar and lounge in the city centre that I knew had a fantastic real fire. I decided to give the owner a call and see if we could film there. He wanted to know why and after a bit of a chat, settled on taking some professional pictures of his bar for his website.
I was wondering what camera to use for this and my Black Magic seemed a good choice. I had a great macro lens for it that I knew would help. I thought I would combine the trip with an evening out with my wife. I called up the babysitter and rushed my wife to get ready. An hour later she was all dolled up and I had my camera and spare battery ready.
Whilst relaxing at the bar with a glass of wine I could see the flames of the fire flickering in the background. A couple of glasses later and I was in the mood to capture this fire with a touch of class. I locked in the macro lens and focused on a large log that was perched up at the front. I didn't want the fire to die over the 20 minutes so I thought this log would last the distance. I set up my white balance and began to shoot. The only problem I had was the sounds of the bar in the background. I needed some quality audio to go with it and after 10 minutes I stopped the recording.
I knew I wanted the sound to be realistic and perfect. I wasn't happy to just dub the audio after and so I actually rearranged something with the owner. I came back the very next evening when the bar was closing. He kindly let me stay and i am glad I did. The sounds of that fire were so crisp and sharp. I had the whole bar to myself and enjoyed relaxing in the silence as I filmed this chic and classy fireplace.
