How often do you feel weary? How often do you act on your impulses to rest your head on a pillow and snooze, if only for a few moments?

Many adults have made suppressing their fatigue and continuing to work an art form, rationalising that there’s always something to be done and that there simply isn’t enough time to rest.

As proactive as this is, it’s hardly a healthy behaviour. Listening to what your body is telling you is one of the hallmarks of a happy life. Everyone is born with the instinct to relax when needed. Children know this. They rest when they need to. As adults we tend to ignore what our body is telling us.

Sometimes to get a restful nights’ sleep, reinvigorate your mind, body and spirit and improve your physical strength, all you need to do is to take a few moments away from the hullabaloo and remember what childhood was like with one of these four things.

Rock Yourself

Now, this may not be for everyone, but it’s been proven that a gentle rocking motion not only helps you to relax, but sleep longer and deeper. Rocking is soothing, calming the most hyperactive of children.

A study, performed in Geneva, Switzerland, discovered that the benefits of rocking yourself are much underestimated. The study invited participants with insomnia and anxiety issues to take two 45-minute naps throughout the day. During the first nap, participants lay in a bed that rocked gently from side the side. The second nap saw participants lie in a motionless bed. An electroencephalogram (EEG) measured brain activity throughout both 45-minute periods.

The results found that participants fell asleep faster when lying in the rocking bed, and moved quicker between sleep stage one and sleep stage two. All participants had increased brain wave activity (associated with more restful sleep) when rocking.

So, the next time you find yourself longing to relax, yet still feel wired from the day’s activities, try rocking yourself gently from side to side – or even better, practice rocking whilst watching relaxing HD background videos!

Take a Bath

All too often, most of us are too busy caring for others to take care of ourselves. A tried and tested way to relax, taking a bath is one of the more immersive ways to completely rest and restore a tired body and mind.

Indeed, a 2014 survey by Johnson & Johnson of 3,500 global parents found that 84% of parents believed bath time to be the best quality time spent with their children. The subconscious memories that we all have of safety, happiness and security during bath time stay with us into adulthood, making a bath an attractive option when relaxation is calling our name.

Not only that but, you’ll be amazed when you experience the healing properties of a bath. Whether you’ve just come from a long day at the office, or have stumbled through the door after kicking a football around a pitch for ninety minutes, taking a bath is the best medicine to cure aches and pains – and to help you relax.

Drink Warm Milk

Despite there being no scientific evidence that a glass of warm milk promotes relaxation, many people the world over swear that it’s one of the best ways to help them relax.

What is true is that milk does contain tryptophan. An amino acid found in meat, cheese, yoghurt, fish, and course, milk, your body turns tryptophan into a B vitamin called niacin, creating serotonin and enhancing melatonin levels; basically, making you feel contented and sleepy.

It’s also fair to assume that many of us an affiliation with warm milk as it can remind us of being a baby, with feelings of warmth and security are abundant.
